TYPE OF PROJECT

Transfer knowledge

Transfer knowledge derived from the omics approach into health services practice, focusing on a patient-centered approach.

Interconnected datasets

Construct a set of interconnected datasets to serve as a reference for developing and rationalizing health policies and industrial decisions.

Disease prevention

Enhance the effectiveness of disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment by considering individual differences and providing professionals with the resources needed for personalized interventions.

Evaluate

Evaluate and leverage the current opportunities presented by omics sciences for population health

Raise awareness

Raise awareness of “omics sciences” and their impact on health, improving the capacity to address the cultural, ethical, and psychological aspects of the “genomic revolution

Promote innovation

Promote cultural, scientific, and technological innovation within the healthcare system and research conducted in the Piedmontese territory. Implement a strategy of “innovation governance” for omics sciences

RESEARCH AREA

Biomedical knowledge is crucial for accelerating discoveries and identifying targets for the development of new diagnostic devices, therapies, and vaccines. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning techniques in research constitutes a new and powerful methodological approach to combine big data and patients’ clinical history, with significant health impacts ranging from diagnostic improvements to the possibility of personalized treatments based on individuals’ genetic backgrounds. Also, the promises of artificial intelligence are great for the prediction and prevention of diseases or large-scale epidemics. Not only hospital facilities but also the healthcare systems of entire countries can benefit from these applications, thanks to the reduction of hospitalization costs.

Thus, the main objective of the TECNOMED-HUB project is to create, in the Piedmontese territory, a 4.0 technological platform to support medical research. This platform is based on the integration of multi-omics platforms already present (but easily implementable for other technologies in the future), with self-learning algorithms, data mining, and big data analytics.

HOW WE ARE DOING IT

"

Research

Although medicine nowadays is increasingly sophisticated, it remains challenging for clinicians to determine if the treatments patients are receiving are truly effective and if their health condition will improve. UPO-CAAD has always been convinced that the key to addressing these challenges can be found in the intrinsic individual “data.” Indeed, the main objective of TECNOMED-HUB is to establish the Piedmont region as a RESEARCH HUB based on an integrated system of multiple “OMIC” platforms, dedicated to addressing current and future pandemics and aiding in the development of the next generation of biomedical research.

Know-how

TECNOMED-HUB is a proof-of-concept project testing the implementation of the HUB during the COVID-19 pandemic. The project includes four strategic lines, which collectively cover all the facilities and large instruments present at CAAD.

Line 1 involves the development of platforms to serve future pandemics, utilizing mass spectrometry, immunomics, antigen profiling, and the implementation of a clinical and omics data repository as a completion of the biobank. The HUB incorporates an AI platform to complement the bioinformatics facility for creating data-driven digital twins.

Line 2 focuses on monitoring the outcomes of COVID-19 in the Piedmontese population one year after the disease.

Line 3 entails the evaluation of the response to the vaccine (Pfizer vs. AstraZeneca) among healthcare personnel, university staff, and “fragile” populations, such as autoimmune patients treated with immunosuppressants.

Line 4 centers on the transfer of the results obtained by TECNOMED-HUB into clinical and routine diagnostic hospital analysis laboratories.

THE ROLE OF UPO

TECNOMED-HUB is currently establishing its CORE at the Translational Research Center for Autoimmune and Allergic Diseases (CAAD) in Novara and is generating big data that is being analyzed using AI. The results obtained are easily adaptable to future needs. This type of platform for knowledge development is increasing the efficiency of the search process by optimizing the organization and integration of already relevant and available data. The CAAD is currently a suitable candidate for a multi-omics service center (HUB) of the future generation, supporting the ongoing research revolution in eastern Piedmont and bridging the technological application gap in an area of interest for both the socio-health system and local businesses.
