RESEARCH AREA

MINDFUL project aims to investigate the relationship between the human gut microbiota and the onset of autoimmune diseases (ADs), by evaluating the contribution of different eating habits and lifestyles in dysbiosis and unravelling the extracellular vesicles (EVs)-mediated communication mechanisms between gut bacteria and immune cells.

Research

Autoimmune diseases (AD) like multiple sclerosis (MS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and type 1 diabetes (T1D) result from an overactive immune system and show an increasing trend, possibly linked to the prevalence of the Western diet (WD) compared to the Mediterranean diet (MD). Understanding the complex interplay between lifestyle, work history, dietary patterns, and social/family networks is crucial for promoting a ‘food for health’ approach that benefits public health and the environment.

Know-how

The project was guided by scientific “cross-cultural contamination” and “complementary expertise” principles to develop innovation and to foster innovation and technological capacity. Indeed, MINDFUL was designed with long perspectives, considering the possibility to access at synergic external technological and financial resources including grants from public and private agencies and from companies.

Since the project aims to study and understand the sociological, anthropological, environmental and biological factors influencing the development and evolution of AD, it was structured in multiple units: basic researcher unit, clinical unit, microbiome unit and industry unit.
